Description

Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, Mom would prepare two pies the day before to enjoy with the holiday family meal: Pumpkin and Apple. While Jason swore by pumpkin pie, Dad always reached for a hearty slice of apple pie, warm from the oven. Perfectly spiced, sweet, and nestled in a golden, flaky crust, this pie was his go-to dessert. And of course, no slice was complete without a scoop of vanilla ice cream slowly melting over the top!

Step by Step Instructions

  • 1

    Preheat the oven to 400°F.

  • 2

In a medium bowl, combine the white sugar, all-purpose flour, and ground cinnamon. Add the sliced Granny Smith apples and toss to evenly coat.

  • 3

Roll out the bottom pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch deep pie dish. Pour the apple mixture into the crust, spreading it evenly.

  • 4

Dot the top of the apple mixture with the small pieces of unsalted butter.

  • 5

Roll out the top pie crust and place it over the apples. Pinch the edges together to seal the pie completely.

  • 6

Use a sharp knife to make 6 small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.

  • 7

Lightly brush the top crust with whole milk, then sprinkle with additional sugar for a golden, crisp finish.

  • 8

Place a large piece of aluminum foil on the oven rack to catch any bubbling overflow. Set the pie dish on top of the foil.

  • 9

Bake for 50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

  • 10

Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool before slicing. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
